Oxidative stress

What is it all about?

Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance in the formation of free radicals within a cell or organism and the body's ability to detoxify their harmful effects using antioxidants.

Under conditions of oxidative stress, cells are subjected to excessive levels of molecular oxygen or its chemical derivatives known as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). Excessive reactive oxygen species induce oxidative stress in the human body and are associated with many pathological conditions.

Diagnostic options

Laboratoires Réunis offers various parameters for determining oxidative stress and antioxidant status:

  • Antioxidant capacity
  • Glutathione profile (reduced, oxidised and total) Glutathione peroxidase
  • Superoxide dismutase
  • Ubiquinone
  • Vitamin E/Vitamin A
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Methylmalonic acid

Specific marker of nitrosative stress :

  • Citrulline
  • Specific markers of lipid peroxidation :
  • Malondialdehyde
  • Oxidised LDL

Specific marker of DNA damage :

  • 8-hydroxideoxyguanosine
